In recent years there has been a remarkable increase in both popular interest and serious research in Scottish historical studies.  This is reflected in the large output of books on a wide variety of themes, the growth in local and family history societies, new innovative approaches by museums in the presentation of their collections, and in the fascination with Scotland’s history exhibited by television production companies, the press, and by subscribers to the internet.

The Economic & Social History Society of Scotland was formed in 1983 to provide a focus and outlet for new historical research. It continues in this role and its membership includes:

The Society’s embrace is international too, with members from Europe, Australasia, Canada, Japan and the USA.

Members receive two copies of the Society’s Journal of Scottish Historical Studies each yearPreviously published as Scottish Economic & Social History, the journal contains the most recent research by foremost historians of Scottish life and society.

Members of the Society are entitled to a 20% discount on titles published by Edinburgh University Press. When placing an order purchasers should inform EUP that they are members of the Society.
